    Barauni Thermal Power Station, India

Consultancy services contract for Barauni thermal power station

STEAG Energy Services India (SESI) was awarded the contract for project management consultancy services for a 2 x 250 MW Barauni thermal power station extension project in Begusarai in the district of Bihar, India. Bihar State Power Generation Company Limited (BSPGCL), a government-owned enterprise, was responsible for generating the energy needs of Bihar, India. The work was done by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) on a turnkey basis for designing, procuring, manufacturing, supplying, factory testing, packing, freight and insurance, receipt and storage at the site, civil works, erection and commissioning, trial run and performance testing of the 2 x 250 MW extension project. This involved the construction of a plant over a disused ash pond. Fly ash, due to its silt size particles, tends towards erosion and liquefaction and a lack of cohesion coupled with a medium range of permeability unless suitable remedial measures are taken. This challenging assignment required suitable treatment to combat the unforeseen damage caused to structures resting over the ash ponds of varying depths down to 15m below ground level.
